You can tell the genre of this magazine is 'film' because of the text on the page, i.e the '16-page special', and also the slugline: 'The World's Best Movie Magazine'.
It has several conventions of a magazine, such as the barcode on the left, the issue number and price (above the 'M' of EMPIRE), and the main story is advertised by a full page picture and large, bold text.
Some good features of this magazine cover are the colour contrasts, where the background of the page, although linked to the film advertised, compliments Empire's colour scheme perfectly. The use of capital letters throughout and a limit of three colours also works well.
Something that maybe doesn't work so well is the picture of John Cusack at the bottom of the page, as it doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the page.
The target audience for this magazine is likely to be 19-35, but this issue may have been read by a younger audience due to the film being featured, 'The Golden Compass', which is a family film with certificate PG.
